Changes are taking place at The Write Design. There is a new phone number - 209.573.0092. The email address is milli@RiverbankWebDesign.com. Some of you already use this address. The main website is www.RiverbankWebDesign.com. Why the changes? We are lowering our overhead. I will be moving my business back to my home office where I have lived for the past 19 years and have worked from for 17 years. I am in the process of vacating my studio in downtown Riverbank where I have met with clients for the last two years. Although, I have very much enjoyed working downtown, I also enjoy working from home. Both locations have their advantages and disadvantages.
A smaller version of my studio is being created at home. The computer desk, file cabinets, 2 chairs, giraffe, and all the plants from my studio are being moved to my home. I am looking forward to having the same tropical modern decor in my home office that I had in my downtown studio. Thinking about the decor - sounds just like a woman, huh? I truly enjoy my clients and look forward to continuing to serve them and new clients, too. My new updated wireless network has already been installed and works great! Ocassionally I "Google" myself so I can see what information about me is on the internet. I thought I had a general idea of what to expect when I do this. Well, last night I "Googled Millicent Sanders." To my surprise, I found a manual I had written for dentists is a library book in the University of Detroit Mercy dental library! I had written the manual, Be Your Own Dental Consultant in 1992. Since I had sold only about 25 copies, I didn't continue to update the manual or continue selling it. After 15 years of management and marketing for dentists, I had decided to limit my services to desktop publishing, commercial print design, and web design. Today I specialize in web design, web content, and search engine optimization for all types of small businesses. Needless to say, the writing and publishing of this manual was not something I had been thinking about lately; however, it was a big project and now a much more rewarding one. When I tell people I have a diploma in copywriting, most people think I obtain copyrights. Few people seem to know that a copywriter is a person who writes "copy." Copywriters are professional writers who write magazine ads, radio ads, TV ads, press releases, web content, blogs, and more. For me, being a copywriter means I can benefit my clients by providing them with relevant content for their website or advice on how to write their content.
How important is web content? If you want to get good search engine positioning, you need at least 250 words per page (excluding the "contact us" page). Five hundred words are even better. Web content is what organic search engine optimization is made of! Useful content - and lots of it - is critical to the success of your web development project.
You often read or hear about relevant and compelling content; but, what is it? Relevant and compelling content is content that is USEFUL to the reader. Your readers are interested in articles about your company, a glossary, tips, and detailed descriptions of your products and services. Granted, not everyone is a reader; however, your search engine placement is based on optimizing your site with relevant content that contains your keywords. Should you add a blog to your website?
Lately you hear alot about social media networking: Twitter, Facebook, blogging and more. Social media consultants recommend using networking to increase your visibility. I think we can all benefit from using social media networking. In addition, I think you should use the social networking tool(s) that you will really USE on a regular basis. Starting something new and then stopping before you give it a chance to work doesn't do much to help your business. I really thought about what social media networking tool would be the best fit for me and I decided on blogging using Moveable Type. I can blog in the evening while I watch TV.
